Pregnancy & New Born Photography

Everything you need to know to prepare for your shoot.

By Anika Diaz

Hi, I’m Anni!

I was born in Germany, but at 22, I moved to Perth after falling in love with a boy who is now my husband and the father of our two children and our German Shepherd, Lina. Over 12 years ago, I earned my Advanced Diploma in Photography, following in the footsteps of my dad, who has always been an avid photographer. As a child, I used to find it a bit annoying that my dad would bring out his camera and start posing everyone at every family event. However, as an adult, I am incredibly grateful that he did.

A bit more about who I am: if you’re like me, credentials aren’t as important as understanding who a person is and what makes them relatable! I’m a mix of introvert and extrovert, and I draw energy from those around me.

When my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 years ago, it was a life-changing experience, but ultimately for the better.

Now, we live a low-tox, conscious lifestyle, mostly eating plant-based. This shift has led me to question many things and set us on a beautiful path. Along the way, I’ve formed lifelong friendships with people who share these values, which is truly special.

I avoid confrontation, but I always stand up for what I believe in. As an empath and an animal lover, I’ve always dreamed of growing my own vegetables. Though my efforts have only yielded a bunch of kale and some tomatoes so far, I’m confident I’ll get there one day. 😉

I love to laugh but also cry easily because I’m very emotional. There’s no pretense with me—what you see is what you get, and I wear my heart on my sleeve.

If you’re looking for a relaxed, understanding photography experience where you don’t have to worry about feeling rushed or embarrassed by your kids’ behavior, I’d love to connect with you.

I can’t wait to meet you and your family, learn your story, and capture your most precious moments together.

Much love, Anni xoxo

Style Guide – What not to wear

  1. Skip logos and words as they draw the eye towards them.
  2. Avoid neon colours or busy graphics and prints. We want you and your loved ones face to be the centre of attention, not distracting clothing.
  3. Footwear – try to avoid thongs and bulky sneakers that look like running shoes.

We aim for you to feel both comfortable and confident, ensuring you’ll cherish these memories for years. Based on my experience, steering clear of certain clothing items can help achieve the best possible results.

Style Guide – What to wear

Comfort
Dress comfortably. Photo shoots with kids often involve activities like dancing, running, or playing games, so your clothing should allow for easy movement. Feel free to bring an extra outfit for a change if you’d like.

Patterns & Texture
When choosing patterns, opt for smaller designs that won’t distract from the main subject. It’s best to have only one person in a pattern. However, I love texture! It adds character and depth to photos. Some great examples are knits, lace, denim, and ruffles. Layers are another excellent way to incorporate pattern and texture into your photos—think cozy cardigans, scarves, beanies, hats, jackets, or boots to make your photos pop.

Colours
I adore soft hues and pastels, but I’m also a big fan of vibrant colors. You might want to choose your outfits based on your chosen location. For example, neutrals work well for the beach or a golden field, while autumn colors like reds and mustard pair beautifully with greenery.

Think about your home décor as well. If your home is filled with neutral tones, adding some color in your photos can create a nice contrast. Conversely, if your home features a variety of colors and textures, you might want to consider a more neutral or plain palette for your photos. After all, these photos will likely end up on your walls.

Coordinate
It might seem unusual to think about coordinating clothing and colours that aren’t matching, but I have a keen eye for what works well together. Lay out the chosen outfits and send me a photo, and I can suggest alternatives if needed. It’s helpful to have one person set the color trend for the rest of the group. I always recommend dressing the mom or adult female first because, let’s face it, it often takes the longest to find the perfect outfit.

Shoots with Kids Family photo sessions can be stressful and daunting, but with some preparation and a lot of patience, your photo session will be an enjoyable experience for the entire family. Let’s work together to make this experience as stress-free as possible.

Prep your kids in advance Inform your kids about the photo shoot well ahead of time. Explain what to expect and express your excitement about the experience. They will feed off your enthusiasm and not want to miss out!

Involve your kids Include your children in the planning process by letting them help pick out their outfits (from choices you approve of to avoid any tears). When children feel involved, they’re happier and more cooperative on the day of the shoot.

Bring Backup Be well-prepared for photo shoot day. Bring a change of clothes, plenty of snacks, water, diapers, etc. Make it fun! Treat photo shoot day as a special occasion. Plan something enjoyable afterward, like a trip to a nearby playground or their favorite dinner or treat. A little bribery can go a long way in keeping things smooth and fun on the day.
